Vegan Apple Cake

What can you make with apples? That’s right, apple cake!

I don’t know about you, but in Germany you basically grow up with apple cake. It’s a small part of our culture, I guess.

On get-togethers with the whole family in the afternoon, you would have your coffee and tea, joined with a warm slice of homemade apple cake.

The hint of cinnamon brings always brings out an additional warming aspect to this delicious and comforting dessert.

Looking back, I wonder why there has actually never been a vegan version of this recipe?

I mean, it’s made from apples, right? Why shouldn’t you be able to make a vegan cake made with fruit?

So we came up with this version. It’s even gluten-free, who would have thought.

Homemade Vegan Apple Cake (gluten-free)

This comforting and delicious vegan apple cake will be the perfect addition to an afternoon coffee with friends or your family. It only requires a few key ingredients, and it’s even gluten-free. Enjoy.


  • For the crust
  • 1 cup oats
  • 2 cups dates
  • 1 cup ground almonds
  • For the filling
  • 5 medium-sized apples
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 tbsp agave juice
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • For the crumbles
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 2 tbsp (warm) coconut oil
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp agave juice



Pre-heat the oven to 180°C (350°) and grease a round cake tin (8×2 inches, or 20x5cm) with coconut oil.


For the crust, add the oats, dates and ground almonds to your food processor or blender and blend into a sticky dough.


Press the dough into your cake tin and create an higher edge (around 1 inch, or 2-3 cm) on the side.


Peel the apples. Remove the inside, then cut into cubes. Add to your mixing bowl.


Squeeze lemon juice over the apples, sprinkle cinnamon and agave juice, then mix apples well by hand.


For the crumbles, mix all ingredients together.


Transfer apple mix into the cake and even it out. Sprinkle crumbles on top.


Bake in the oven for 50 minutes. If the edge becomes too dark, turn down the heat a little.


Let it cool down and enjoy.
